Each week we will focus on a new spelling rule (unless I discover that we need more than one week to learn the specific spelling rule). On Monday, the students and I will create a list of words that fits the spelling rule.
For example, this week we focused on long /a/ patterns (ai, aCe, ay, and ei). Students then choose 6 words from this word list along with 4 words from their individual list in their spelling folder. Throughout the week we practice the words on our list as well as focusing on long /a/ patterns in reading.
On Friday the students will take a spelling test. I will give them the first 6 words on their spelling test. The first six words on their test can be any words from the spelling list we created on Monday. They are not necessarily the ones they selected because our goal is for them not to simply memorize those six words, but to learn how to apply the spelling rule and when to use the different patterns. Then they will get with their spelling buddy and take the last 4 words on their spelling test.
So when you are studying throughout the week, don't just study the words on the list. Ask your child what the spelling rule is and study several long /a/ words to help them learn the spelling rule with all words.
