Class Issues

Well the "honeymoon period" of back to school is over and I am getting to see true student personalities and they are getting to see mine as well. We have a great class....and I am not just saying that. The kids get a long well, work together, and just have overall good attitudes. Good job parents...you are teaching them well! The only issue that we continue to struggle with is being on time and on task. We spend a lot of time each day waiting on students, repeating what materials are needed, and just waiting for everyone to pay attention. All of these things add up quickly and take a lot of time out of the day!

We discussed this in our class meeting today as we looked at our "On Time Chart" and noticed several dots falling below the goal line lately. Most of the students are on time, but it only takes a few to cause us to wait. So after our meeting we decided that the whole class doesn't deserve to be punished. Instead those who are late or off task should have a consequence to pay. Since they are spending the time they are supposed to be working talking and off task....the class voted they should have extra homework to do that night during their free time. The students decided that if you are on time and do what you are supposed to do, then you won't have to worry about it. So we made a homework pile along with a letter to parents. When students are off task or late they will have to pick up a worksheet and letter to be signed which will be due the next day.

Please encourage your child to be responsible. It is his/her job to get this homework done. We have chosen homework they should be able to complete independently without much parent support.

Thanks for your support! I am proud of your children as they are taking ownership of this classroom and setting consequences that need to be set. They are helping us create a functional system that is essential for learning to take place.
